Staying Pure In An Impure Society
Chris Blacksmith, Pastor

Psalm 119:9"How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to thy word."
In our house one of the most hated jobs is taking out the garbage. Not only is it one of the most hated jobs, but it is one of the most necessary jobs. Just think about what your house would become if you never removed the garbage. I’m sure it would become cluttered, smelly, and above all very noticeable.
In a sense that is what our society is experiencing. We have failed to take out the garbage, and as result we are drowning in a sea of impurity. The Psalmist asked a difficult question: How do we remain pure? How can we remain pure and ignore the homosexual movement? How can we remain pure and ignore the advances of embryonic stem cell research?, How can we remain pure and ignore the countless abortions that occur on a daily basis? How can we remain pure and ignore the fact that liberals are working feverishly to remove God from every fiber of our country? The answer is simple; you can’t. Amos 3:3 asks the rhetorical question, "How can two walk together accept they agree?". God’s righteousness and the immoralities of our day have never agreed; furthermore, they never will.
It is time for Christians across our country to take a stand against the filth that is infiltrating America. We can no longer remain passive in this matter. It disturbs me when Christians complain about immorality yet choose to remain silent on the issue. The poem Stand Up For Jesus eloquently expresses this very point.
"You talk about your business,
Your bonds and stocks and gold;
And in all worldly matters
You are so brave and bold
But why are you so silent
About salvation’s plan?
Why don’t you stand for Jesus
And speak out like a man?
You talk about the weather,
The crops of corn and wheat;
You speak of friends and neighbors
Who pass along the street.
You call yourself a Christian
And like the gospel plan
Then why not stand for Jesus
And speak out like a man?
Have you forgot His suffering?
Did He die for you in vain?
Then take a stand for Jesus
And speak out like a man."

Are the days gone when Christians take a stand for Jesus? Eleven of our states answered that question with a resounding no in this year’s election. As you are well aware by now, eleven states chose to ban same sex marriages. Identical results can happen in every state if Christians nationwide will stand up for Christ and voice their opinion.
I hear the same question asked nearly everywhere I go. "How can I make a difference?" First of all, we need to be informed on the issues. Second, we need to contact our senators, representatives, and President Bush through hand-written letters or phone calls. A third way, is to organize a grassroots movement that will put our concerns on a ballot. Finally, we must follow through by going to the polls and voting. These methods are tried and true and will be most effective when bathed in prayer.
So how can we stay pure in an impure society? The answer lies in the second portion of Psalm 119:9. We can remain pure by heeding God’s word. In His word we are told to be in the world but not of the world. He also tells us to let our "…light so shine that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father which is in heaven". It is imperative, in this day and age, for the church to remain pure in an impure society, ever striving to take out the garbage in America.
