Texas Pro-Family Groups Push for Parental Consent Act (Free Market Foundation,) along with Texas pro-family and pro-life groups, is working to increase awareness on the Texas Parental Consent Act, which seeks to change the state law to protect minor girls from abortion or coercion by restoring parent’s rights. The bill is currently in the Texas House, H.B. 1212, by Rep. Phil King (R-Weatherford) and in the Texas Senate, S.B. 1150, by Sen. Chris Harris (R-Arlington). The Parental Consent Act is important because it would require physicians to obtain parental consent. Call your state representative and senator.

Open Season on the Social Security Trust Fund (grassfire.org) President Bush has made it clear that a key second-term goal is reforming and strengthening Social Security. At Grassfire it is fast becoming ours as well. In fact, we are angry about the state of Social Security—but not for reasons you might think. Did you know that since 1985, the government has been pillaging your Social Security Trust Fund—the same fund that working Americans have been paying into for decades, and are counting on to get you through your “golden years”? Last year alone $169 billion was “withdrawn” from your Social Security Trust fund to help offset federal spending. But that is nothing new. You see, for nearly twenty years, hundreds of billions of dollars have been siphoned from our nation’s Social Security Trust fund to offset deficit spending—and even worse, the government has no plan to repay that money—they just write IOUs to the American people.

As a Washington Post nationally syndicated columnist and FOX News contributor Charles Krauthammer wrote in his February 18, 2005 column, the Social Security trust fund is “fictional”. He even added, “The Social Security system has no trust fund.” Is this true? Has the Social Security system become pay as you go? For years we’ve listened to words like “surplus”, and “lockbox”, words that gave us the illusion that things were grand and secure. With billions being taken from our account, this simply isn’t the case.

The Federal Government has not responsibly managed the Social Security Trust fund. They have not acted judiciously to make certain the fund would be there when needed. Instead, they have put politics ahead of the people, and are bleeding our trust fund dry. So, we ask you, where is your outrage? Grassfire is outraged— We have also launched our national “Taxpayer Freedom and Fairness” petition to address the critical economic issues like Social Security, taxes and tax reform. Over the next 60 days, We want to mobilize at least 100,000 citizens who share our concerns and demands about Social Security, taxes and tax reform. Join with us in standing against the pillaging of our Social Security Trust fund by taking action with Grassfire today at www.grassfire.org.

The Ten Commandments Are A Symbol Of Law And Appropriate To Display In Courthouses (Mathew D. Staver, Liberty Council) There is a critical difference between government acknowledgments of religion, which the Constitution permits, versus an establishment of religion, which the Constitution forbids.

It is not surprising that in a Nation established by religious refugees, we find references to the divine in our songs, in our mottos, in our architecture and in our documents. To erase our history would eliminate the essence of this country - a Nation founded upon religious freedom, where we can acknowledge God and religion and where freedom of conscience is not trampled. If the Ten Commandments are unconstitutional, and if when government merely acknowledges religion, it thereby establishes it, then the sandblasters will become common, and the merciless jackhammers will disturb our peace. Our Constitution was not intended to foster callous hostility toward religious expression."

Will The Ten Commandments Make It Down This Mountain? (Family Research Council) The battle to preserve America's religious heritage moved to the U.S. Supreme Court when two cases challenging Ten Commandments displays were argued. Family Research Council has filed amicus briefs in both cases, McCreary County Kentucky v. ACLU of Kentucky and Van Orden v. Perry, Governor of Texas. McCreary challenges the inclusion of the Ten Commandments in the McCreary and Pulaski county courthouses as part of a display of several historical and legal documents. Mat Staver, president of Liberty Council of Florida, argued the Van Orden involves a display on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol among a wide array of monuments depicting the secular and religious history of Texas. It was a gift of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 1961. The Van Orden brief urge an abandonment of the false notion that our Founding Fathers intended a "wall of separation between church and state." The decision in these cases, expected in June, will affect every religious display on public property in America. Please pray for the Justices.

Muslim Shift? (American Values By Gary Bauer) The biggest Muslim nation is Indonesia, the nation hardest hit by the recent tsunami. A new poll out of Indonesia indicates that "hearts and minds" may have been changed by our generosity.

For the first time since September 11th, more people in a major Muslim country favor the U.S. effort to fight terrorism than oppose us (40% to 36%). Support for bin Laden has tumbled to 23%. Sixty-five percent of Indonesians say they feel more favorable toward the United States.

Family Advocates Are Outraged Over Texas Case (Citizen Link-Family Focus) Pro-life Texas state Rep. Ray Allen co-sponsored the Prenatal Protection Act. The law's target was drunk drivers or someone who assaults a pregnant woman during a robbery, but Allen never imagined a case where a mother would ask her boyfriend to help her kill their own preborn twins."He is going to be charged with capital murder," Allen explained, "and the mother who could have legally had the pregnancy terminated is not going to be charged with a crime. Allen said. "Its gross stupidity. But that's not a crime in any of the 50 states."

Prayer Banned At Louisiana School Board Meetings (Washington Update-Tony Perkins) In Louisiana, protesters came out in support of prayer following a decision Feb. 25th banning prayer at school board meetings by U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan. Judge Berrigan, a former state president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) appointed to the Federal bench by President Clinton, ruled that the Tangipahoa School Board's tradition of opening meetings with a prayer "undermines the First Amendment establishment clause that upholds that schools must remain neutral on religious belief." Groups hostile to religion, like the ACLU or People for the American Way, need to realize that silencing religion not only violates the United States Constitution but also the basic laws of man.

School Board Ruling Prompts Emphasis On Prayer (Mike Hasten-©The Shreveport Times) LOUISIANA -The Tangipahoa School Board skipped its traditional opening prayer Tuesday night; while in Caddo Parish, board members gave their "amen" a little extra emphasis. Numerous school board meetings began Tuesday with the usual prayers but with an unusual eye toward a federal judge's ruling outlawing such prayers at Tangipahoa School Board meetings.

Caddo School Board members rotate in offering prayer and leading the pledge of allegiance, ending with a resounding "amen." A number of public bodies -- including the governor's office -- had their prayers answered Tuesday night when the Tangipahoa School Board voted to appeal Berrigan's ruling to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. "As long as I've known, we have had prayer at our board meetings," Bossier schools Superintendent Kenneth Kruithof said. Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti has joined with Gov. Kathleen Blanco in a plan to file friend-of-the-court briefs in support of prayer before school board meetings.

Democratic Cyber Talk Show To Trash Republicans (Citizen-Link) Make way for the newest on-line talk show -- it's called DemsTV.com and is the latest salvo in the ongoing media war between liberals and conservatives, The Washington Post reported. DemsTV.com Dan Manatt, one of the show's producers, said the show also hopes to cash in on finding dirty laundry on Republicans.

Silence Won't Do! (American Values by Gary Bauer) There was strong reaction to Justice Kennedy's citing of international law in the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the juvenile death penalty. In a outstanding Wall Street Journal editorial in which they observe, "From gay rights to racial preferences and now to the death penalty, a narrow majority of Justices has been imposing its own blue state cultural mores on the rest of the country. We suspect it is also inviting a political backlash." I can only imagine what the Court will do with the Ten Commandments case.

After all, when drafting its new constitution the delegates of the European Union refused to acknowledge God, so I guess we can't either under Justice Kennedy's reasoning. The fact that a poll this week by the Associated Press shows that the U.S. public supports the display of the Commandments by a 76%-to-23% margin will no doubt be irrelevant.

But, there won't be much of a backlash if the average American isn't told by our political leadership that these decisions are outrageous. The president has a "bully pulpit" and he needs to use it. The Congress has ways to rein in the Judiciary - it is time to implement them! You can encourage the president to speak up by emailing him at: president@whitehouse.gov

Pornographers, Watch Out! (Family Research Council) New Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in his first major address as the nation's chief law enforcement officer, vowed to prosecute obscenity crimes aggressively. This is welcome news, Parents across the nation empathize with General and Mrs. Gonzales in an age when children have access to obscene material on the Internet, email, cable, satellite TV, in book and video stores.
