"I Was Thirsty And You…" (American Values By Gary Bauer) An increasing number of people are asking why Terri Schiavo cannot be given crushed ice or a sip of water. The court order required that her feeding tube be removed - what the other side refers to as "pulling the plug," as if she were an appliance. But, police posted at the door block any attempt to give her water or nourishment by mouth. A Texas family, including children, was arrested last week for attempting to give her a sip of water. How can providing her with water or pureed food by mouth make things any worse? And on what moral or ethical grounds do we withhold these things from her?
Today, Christians commemorate the Resurrection of Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, verses 35 and 36, Jesus says, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." His disciples were puzzled and asked when had they done those things for Him. Christ responds (verse 40), "…Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it for me."
Terri Schiavo: Starving The Innocent (Tony Perkins Family Research Council) Steven Kenneth Staley, 42, won reprieve just hours before his scheduled execution in Texas Thursday. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals halted the execution of Mr. Staley to allow his lawyers to develop further appeals. In 1989, Mr. Staley, while robbing a restaurant, shot and killed a man. There is no doubt that Mr. Staley committed the crime, but he won his appeal on a technicality during the trial process. Theresa (Terri) Marie Schiavo, 42, Thursday had an appeal denied by the United States Supreme Court. Mrs. Schiavo has been convicted of no crime, yet was sentenced to painfully starve to death by Pinellas Circuit Court Judge George Greer.
Thursday Judge Greer barred state officials from rescuing Terri and anyone else from feeding the starving woman. Mrs. Schiavo's only crime is to have suffered brain damage under questionable circumstances over fifteen years ago.
No Compromise On Marriage
(American Values by Gary Bauer) A county judge in San Francisco, California, struck down the state's marriage law in very sweeping language that left no room for compromise. The most disturbing aspect of the judge's decision was his declaration that the meaning of normal marriage serves no rational purpose - (a clear sign of the radical left worldview.) But if limiting marriage to a man and a woman is "irrational," then so, too, are other commonly accepted restrictions, like those against polygamy, age of consent laws, and restrictions against the marriage of close blood relatives. But, wait, there's more. Judge Kramer also flatly rejected as "separate but equal" a brief filed by California's attorney general defending the state's domestic partnership law. In fact, Judge Kramer's reasoning is a warning to anyone who thinks there is a "middle ground" on marriage. He declared that the state's attempt to provide homosexual couples with some of the benefits of marriage actually undermined the state's efforts to preserve the normal definition of marriage.Watch this, my friends, because if Judge Kramer's reasoning regarding domestic partnerships or civil unions is widely embraced by other judicial activists, as I suspect it will be, then legislative efforts to compromise on marriage will prove detrimental. No politician can now credibly claim, as so many do, that they support traditional marriage AND civil unions for same-sex couples. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are a "Trojan horse" that judges will use to radically redefine the institution of marriage.
The bottom line is that we are rapidly losing the right to govern ourselves and to define our common values for ourselves. Militant activists are using the courts to usurp the authority of our elected legislatures in order to force their "morality" on the overwhelming majority. We will lose this battle for marriage one court case at a time unless the president and Congress act quickly. By the way, Republicans must take judicial appointments seriously. According to numerous press reports, Judge Kramer was appointed by former Republican Governor Pete Wilson.
Bill To Prohibit Human Cloning Introduced In Congress (Citizen-Link) A bill that would effectively ban all forms of human cloning was introduced in Congress by an alliance of both Democrats and Republicans. The bill, titled the Human Cloning Prohibition Act, is sponsored in the Senate by Sens. Sam Brownback, R-Kan. and Mary Landrieu, D-La.; and in the House by Reps. Dave Weldon, R-Fla., and Bart Stupak, D-Mich.
Protection For Boy Scouts Sought (Keith Peters, Focus on the Family) This bill would guarantee Scouts access to public facilities. The bill was introduced in the upper chamber by Tennessee's two Republican senators—Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and former Education Secretary Lamar Alexander—while Rep. JoAnn Davis, R-Va., is submitting a similar version in the House. She said the Scouts are defending themselves from being excluded from Defense Department facilities and those of other government agencies.
The Scouts have been under attack for several years now for meeting in those places and venues, enduring 14 lawsuits initiated by the ACLU in the last 25 years. Tom McClusky, government relations director for the Family Research Council, said the Scouts are being persecuted, pure and simple because of their stance, religion, their belief in God and the American way."

Please Pray For The Jurors In The Barrow Trial (Free Market Foundation) The Karen Jo Barrow v. Greenville Independent School District case originated when Mrs. Barrow was denied the opportunity to interview for a vice principal position within Greenville ISD because she refused to remove her children from a private Christian school. Arguments in this trial were completed last Thursday, the jury will now have an unlimited amount of time to deliberate and return a decision. The trial began on March 14, 2005, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas with Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater presiding.
Will Marriage Become "Hate Speech (Grassfire.net)

Those getting married are now listed on the official state marriage license as "Party A" and "Party B". The state's public health department is now exploring new birth certificates that replace "mother" and "father" with "Parent A"and "Parent B". These legal attacks are not about gay or lesbian "rights." Gays and lesbians already have ALL of the same rights as other Americans. But what these radical activists are pressing for is the destruction of marriage. While it is hard to believe, those are the names of real cigarettes to which candy flavors have been added. Big Tobacco says that these products are exclusively for adults. Do you believe them? Do you believe Big Tobacco should be able to make such a blatant attempt to addict our kids? Do you know that the Federal Government is powerless to stop this marketing? The Federal Government does not have any authority over the manufacturing, sale and marketing of tobacco. (Consumer Union) Texas legislators just passed a bill (HB 789) out of committee that will allow SBC and Verizon to raise the price of basic phone service without limit. The bill will be voted on by the full House of Representatives in the next few days. Affordable basic telephone rates are important for the millions of Texas consumers who have a home phone line with few if any add-on services. There’s little to no competition to hold basic phone prices in check. SBC and Verizon dominate 84% of the residential phone market statewide. In rural areas they hold 91% of the market. As the Austin American Statesman has reported, telecom lobbyists are swarming the Capitol right now.
